first thoughts on a famous quote in Romeo and Juliet
In Romeo and Juliet there are many quotes and lines that are quite famous. Today I'm going to talk about "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" because it is hard to understand when expressed in our everyday speech. In this line Juliet isn't just asking where Romeo is, but is instead wondering why he had to be the son of an enemy family. So instead of wherefore, today we would say "Why are you Romeo?" This quote also goes along with the play's theme of love and the lack of reason in the hatred between the Capulets and Montagues. Juliet loves Romeo, but in the end hatred between their families ends their love and ultimately, their lives.
My first post
Hi I'm Brooke and I'm an English education major. I am using this blog to explore famous quotes in plays. Many people say these quotes everyday without realizing their true meanings. How many times have you heard someone say "To be or not to be?" or "Wherefore art thou Romeo?" Small lines in plays can hold a big clue to what the time period was like, what the author believed in, and also show the audience a fundamental part of life or human nature. Through this blog I hope to discover more quotes and explore their meanings. I also hope hear thoughts about them from others.
